Flutist Carmen Maret and guitarist Andrew Bergeron perform, compose, teach and are entrepreneurs from Grand Rapids, Michigan. Together they are known as the Folias Duo.
Folias’ 14 year performer-composer collaboration has taken this nomadic husband and wife duo to stages throughout the United States and around the globe. In addition to extensive touring in the US they have performed in Europe (Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Italy, and Portugal), South America (Argentina and Chile) and Africa (Guinea). Their 5 CD releases feature a bold approach to writing original compositions for flute and guitar, an expertise for arranging Argentine social tango dance music, and a passion for South American folk and other world music. Of Folias’ performing and composing, Robert Schulslaper of Fanfare Magazine writes: “Carmen Maret and Andrew Bergeron are facile players…They draw on tango rhythms and melodies sometimes; at other times they write with a scenic sensitivity…mysterious…charming…evocative,” while Todd Gorman of American Record Guide calls Folias, “daring in self-written music” and possessing “a nice touch of originality.”
The duo’s 2015/2016 concert season demonstrates their versatility in arranging and performing as well as their prowess for self management and promotion. The Chamber Music at the Scarab Club Series in Detroit presented Folias’ arrangement of Piazzolla’s Angel Suite for flute, guitar and string quartet along with Bergeron’s original flute and guitar composition Folias Variations. Their self-booked 2016 summer tour of the United States includes 21 performances throughout the southwest and features debut performances at the Burning Tango Festival and a concert on the Davis Arts Center Classical Guitar Series. Lee Passarella wrote in Audiophile Audition Review: “There’s really a lot to like here for enthusiasts of tango, blues, and jazz. Performances are suave and full of energy.”
Since 2005, Bergeron and Maret have operated their own website Folias Music where they offer their independently produced recordings and self-published sheet music, host a podcast called Folias Music Live and write for a blog that documents their joyful exploration of food and nature throughout the world.
As specialists in Argentine tango music, the Folias Duo has performed for milongas in over 40 tango communities throughout the world. As both musicians and dancers they work to continually cultivate camaraderie and communication between dancers and musicians in their musicality workshops which have been featured by presenters such as the Albuquerque Tango Society, MTango at the University of Michigan, the Madison Tango Society and festivals such as the Fairbanks, Alaska Summer Arts Festival and the Atlin Music Festival in northern British Columbia.
As educators, Folias is active throughout the state of Michigan giving performances and guest lectures at Michigan State University, University of Michigan, Grand Valley State University, Albion College, and Hope College. In 2015 they gave a music business presentation at Wayne State University as well as a lecture recital on Argentine tango at Central Michigan University.
